TEENAGER George Armstrong strong-armed his way past 60 fellow beefcakes to be crowned Mr Bolton in his hometown.

George, aged 18, out-muscled older and more experienced competitors to land the title at the fourth annual Mr Bolton, which was held at St Mary’s Church Hall in Horwich.

More than 200 people saw entrants compete in different classes before young George was pronounced the winner.

George, who lives in Brooklands, Horwich, was extremely proud to win the contest. He said: “I was very shocked when they announced it, particularly because some of the guys had 20 years on me, but it was great to win it in Horwich where I have lived all my life.”

George said his finely honed physique requires a great deal of dedication and he sticks to a strict food and exercise programme.

He said: “Before a show I do cardio every morning and will only eat 50g of carbohydrates, the rest is meat, fish and vegetables.”

The teenager, who is studying a personal training course at Runshaw College, can bench-press an impressive maximum weight of 160kg.

There is a history of weightlifting in his family.

George said: “My granddad, John Armstrong, actually opened the first gym in Bolton and he was also a member of the world’s strongest man team at one stage, so I have been inspired by him.”

The teenager is no stranger to success — he picked up the National Amateur Body-Builders’ Association under-18 title in last October.

Now George, whose bicep measures 17 inches, wants to focus on body-building as a future career as well as planning to form a new nutritional brand in the future.

When he is preparing for a show, he crams in an hour of weight-training and an hour-and-a-half of cardio work every morning before college. He trains at Jay’s Gym, where owner Jon Tuplin, a former winner of Mr Bolton, has helped with his training.

Mr Tuplin said: “Some of these lads competing were in their 40s, so George has done fantastically well.

“I’m really proud of him. He is a committed young man who doesn’t really go out partying because he wants to focus on his training.”

He added: “This was the fourth Mr Bolton event and I think it is going to grow. It has been really successful and we would like other people to get involved.”
