Who shot Billy Webb? Daughter's appeal on anniversary of notorious Bolton drug baron's murder

The Bolton News: Ashlea Parr with holiday snaps featuring her dad Billy Webb Ashlea Parr with holiday snaps featuring her dad Billy Webb

THE teenage daughter of Bolton's most notorious gangland drugs baron is appealing for justice on the anniversary of his murder.

Ashlea Parr was aged just six when her father, Billy Webb, was repeatedly shot and killed in bed at his flat in Wigan on May 25, 2001.

The 42-year-old’s killers let themselves into his flat with a key in what is believed to be a planned execution. The murderers have never been caught.

Miss Parr, from Great Lever, said: “It’s horrible to think that the people who killed my dad are still walking the streets. I could walk past them and never know. I could be in the pub and they could be there beside me.

“If somebody was charged or found guilty of his murder, that would close it all for me.

"I would feel like my life could go back to normal. I think quite a few people know who is involved in his death.

"I think people are too scared to come forward in case they get shot themselves.”

Paul Swann, from Morecambe, and Brian Roper, from Deane, were tried for conspiracy to murder Mr Webb two years after his death, but the jury was directed to find them not guilty on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

Neither man was suggested to have pulled the trigger. Mr Webb had previously lived in Freshfield Avenue, Great Lever, but moved to Whiteledge Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, before his death.

A 21-year-old woman, believed to have been in a casual relationship with Mr Webb, was also shot in the arm during the incident.

Mr Webb, also known as William Craig, was due to face a charge of conspiring to supply drugs at Liverpool Crown Court when he died.

MORE:

Miss Parr said: “Most of my memories of my dad have been destroyed by what happened to him. I remember my dad always being there for me. I know he still would be now.

“I remember going on holiday with him to Spain — they were happy memories and now I don’t know what to think as I have been told so many different stories. I remember kneeling down by his grave after his funeral.

“I just want it all to end. People have said it was gang and drug related but I couldn’t say.

"Whatever he was doing he did not deserve to be shot. How would the people who did it feel if it was their families?”

She added she wants police to investigate his murder again and said she feels like she has to try to find those responsible.

Mr Webb was said to have been linked to the notorious murder of Dillon Hull, aged five, who was shot in the head in Bankfield Street, Deane in August, 1997 while he was walking with his stepfather, John Bates — the intended target.

But Paul Seddon was jailed for life in 1998 for Dillon’s murder and must serve a minimum of 25 years.

Miss Parr said she will visit her father’s grave in Deane Cemetery tomorrow, the 13th anniversary of his death.

She also visits on his birthday in December. Miss Parr takes photographs, which have been enlarged, and poems to the graveside.

A police spokesman said: “This murder remains unsolved and remains open. We would therefore ask anyone with information to call Greater Manchester Police’s cold case review unit or independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously.”

The police cold case review unit can be called on 0161 8565961 and Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Firstly, I can't believe the BN has wasted anytime whatsoever on this story of a drug dealing criminal.

No one should be murdered, but if one get's involved in dealing drugs then that has a much wider ruination on society and families lives. All these idiots who get involved with such activity get whatever comes their way. It's happened since the year dot and isn't going to change anytime soon.

It's sad for any innocent son/daughter to loose their dad, but as society isn't forgiving for drug dealers and their comeuppance, if and when that happens, then there won't be many grieving any scum who has dealt drugs.

It's a fact of life that Billy Webb got what, as society would deem, he deserved..

Maybe he did get what he deserved but does that mean his killers shouldn't bebrought to justice. His killers aren't crime fighters dispensing justice they are more than likely involved in the drug trade to and happy to kill anyone who gets in their way. Do we really want these people out on the streets?

I feel very sorry for this young lady not only because she has lost her Dad, but also because when she researches him she will find that he most certainly was not a nice person to people other than herself and was responsible for torturing and tormenting people to death by his own hand and reaped an entirely predictable death as a direct result.I hope the grief she feels will be shared with the families and children of those people William Craig murdered or destroyed.

He was much more than a drug dealer. He was a Grade A professional villain, thug, murderer, drug dealer, and just about anything else to do with criminality.

No, but you can be very ashamed of them. User1985, please give it a rest. Think about why Bolton News has gone with this story, or should I say non-story. It's a classic deflection and diversion of important local and national issues that affect us all, which Bolton News are becoming more reluctant to report on. O'Flynn and the Bolton News will be judged in the future as being, without doubt, very poor and weak at journalism.

Am not a fan of billy nither i am one of his followers but i would like to say when billy was alive the drugs scene in bolton was controlled. No tom dick or harry could deal on the streets of bolton. If someone did and billy found out then a verbal warning was given and if it persisted then further action would be taken. Ever since he died the floodgates have flung open for anyone to start dealing. The main people to benefit from this are the teenagers and youngsters. Back in the days if you wanted to score then they were only a handful of dealers assigned to a particular area. Now you see everyones doing it willy nilly. Asian dealers were only a few but now it is increasing by the day. Ever since john barber has been lockd up and billy dead the fear factor has completely dissapeared. Dont get me wrong am 100% completely against drugs of any class but them days it was controlled and the police knew it as well. I hope their is some closure to this for his daughters sake as she would want to put this whole thing behind her.

Time for me to unsubscribe and exit stage left as the old saying goes.

I think we get the majority of opinion expressed on this topic.

If Ashlea reads this, here is some advice from someone with 33 years life experience more than yourself.

The age of life you are at you should be enjoying it to the MAX. You only get one teenage life and one set of twenties, and those are for having a ball of a time. They are THE BEST years of your life, make the best of them. Don't let your dads past ruin your current and future life.

I dare say many of us commenting remember very well what Billy Webb and Co were all about, and it sure wasn't collecting for the Red Cross or other charities.

Hopefully Ashlea can move on and not let this tar her life, although somehow, as things are at the moment, I doubt it. I hope I am wrong.

Ashlea, I don't think anyone would ask you to forget your dad but your dad would not be wanting you to ruin your life for him. He would want you to live life to the full and probably not make the mistakes he did. Try to throw yourself in to something good in life and not waste it on negative activities. Make him proud of you and most of all, stop beating yourself up for something you can not change. Yes, killers should always be brought to justice but Dillon's killers were never brought beofre a court and a lot of criminal activity goes unreported etc. Sometimes as you know, life is just not fair. If I were you, I would be a little bit discreet. People out there still want revenge for Dillon so don't make yourself a target. Most rational people know that whatever your dad did is not your fault but you must disassociate yourself with all the negative forces surrounding his life.. before it becomes your doom. Your dad will always be with you in spirit. The last thing he would want is for you to follow in his footsteps and get caught up in the same crap that he was involved in... with the same sort of people crawling out of the woodwork etc. Make the most of your life and let him live it through you. You will meet up again one day but don't try to do that too early. Live your life to the full and enjoy it in his memory! That is what he would have wanted. He loved you so let him know you love him by loving yourself as much as he loved you. Your surviving family members are also the ones you need to be looking out for and making proud. They have been through enough stress. All negatives can be turned into positives. x

I think this post is one of the best posts I've seen on this forum.

"I think people are too scared to come forward in case they get shot themselves.”

Then I think it is wise to leave well alone, Ashlea. Is it really worth dragging up the past? What if you yourself get hurt in all of this - these are dangerous people whoever they are.

As a sidenote, I feel the BN have behaved irresponsibly by reporting this story.

I feel Bolton News have acted a little strangely in putting this young person out there. I don't personally know any of the people involved in these cases. I just remember the news articles about Dillon but from what I can gather, there are many, many people who hated Billy Webb so before anyone thinks or says that I am saying anyone in Dillon's family were responsible for Billy's death... that is NOT what I am saying. I am just pointing out that there are probably a lot of folks out there who are hating the injustice of a few things in the past... and that people in this town who didn't necessarily know any of the parties involved, felt or still feel, passionate about the death of an innocent child, due to bad decisions made by those involved in drugs. Although most onlookers can see that Billy's daughter is in innocent victim in all this, few have sympathy and I think that's partly understandable... but at the same time it's a bit twisted and wrong to be haters of the next generation... Innocent until proven guilty and all that ... (Ashlea has just got to try doubly hard not to get involved in anything stupid as too many haters would love to see her fail).... If this news upsets outsiders, I would bet my bottom dollar that there are a few people who have very deep grievances regarding Billy Webb and his associates and that they find this article laughable and deplorable. Sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.
