THREE Bolton Wanderers legends rolled back the years to take part in a charity football match in aid of the Christie hospital.

John McGinlay, Tony Kelly and Nicky Spooner joined the Oxford Grove team at Smithills School to play against Christie FC — a team created by event organiser Rob Boulton, who lives in Halliwell.

The clash saw the pros win the game 5-1, with the event raising £570.

Mr Boulton, aged 29, said: “I made up the team Christie FC with friends of mine and we played against the Wanderers players who had teamed up with Oxford Grove.

“We played one full game and as you can imagine we got thrashed, but for us it was all about raising the money for the Christie.

“It was a great weekend. What started off as a fundraising match escalated into something massive. Plus I can now say that I have played on a pitch with three Bolton Wanderers legends.”

Talking of why he chose to fundraise for the Christie, he added: “I’m from Stoke originally so I didn’t hear about the Christie until I moved up to Bolton.

“My partner’s friend has had a breast removed and a couple of times she struggled to get there for her treatment, so I drove her myself.

“After seeing the work they do there it instantly gripped me and I knew I had to do something.”
