A CHARITY football day in memory of a woman who died from cancer last year has raised more than £1,000 for Bolton Hospice.

Janet Fletcher, aged 55, was due to be admitted into the hospice at the end of last year but she died in September.

Her son Roy Fletcher, aged 37, decided to round up a few football teams he used to play with in a Sunday league to raise money for the hospice, which provides specialist care services to people facing cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Footballers from the Bolton Castle in Tonge Moor, the Rocket in Breightmet, the Bowling Green in Tonge Fold and the Queen Elizabeth in Great Lever played in a mini tournament and raised £1,100 through online contributions and donations on the day.

Bolton Castle beat the Bowling Green on penalties in the final.

Local businesses such as Elite Training and Hair Lounge also donated vouchers and prizes for the raffle and auction.

Mr Fletcher said: “I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the day and helped raise the money, and also those who donated to such a good cause.

“It was a fantastic afternoon and I’m sure mum would be happy that the money is going towards someone local who is receiving care at the hospice.”

Stephanie Lacaille, community fundraising manager at Bolton Hospice, said: “We have to find £2.4 million a year to run the hospice and rely on individuals like Roy to help us with this.

“The money he has raised will now go to helping local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.”
