The funeral was being held today for a father who died after being dragged under a bus for 200 yards.

Delroy Finney was on his way back from an interview at a Jobcentre when he became trapped under the 534 Arriva bus travelling through the Oldhams Estate in Astley Bridge.

The 46-year-old had only met his grandson for the first time the night before the incident on May 9.

Mr Finney had lived in the Philippines for three-and-a-half years with his wife, Ana Rose, before coming back to Bolton just days before his death.

His devastated daughter, Shaunel Finney, from Heaton, has paid tribute to her father.

The 26-year-old mother-of-two said: “He was really missing his grandchildren and was emailing me a lot when he was in the Philippines to try to get back and see my little lad, James, who is 10 months old.

“It was amazing. he had tea at our house, a little family together. I was going to see him again the following Monday.

“It’s hard to talk about what happened to him. I try not to think about what happened.”

It was first thought that Mr Finney’s clothing became caught as he got off the bus, but his daughter said it is now believed that he collapsed and then became trapped.

An inquest will establish the circumstances surrounding Mr Finney’s death. A post mortem examination found he had died of multiple injuries.

Miss Finney said: “Over the last 10 years I haven’t seen a heck of a lot of him, but he always kept up contact with me.

“Remembering him as a kid, he was a really good dad. He would tuck me into bed, teach me songs on the keyboard — and we always did his mum’s head in by playing the music too loud.

“He was so chatty, always joking, and really intelligent.

“I was really looking forward to seeing him again, and getting to know him as an adult. Instead, I’ve had that taken away from me.”

Mr Finney’s funeral takes place at Overdale West Chapel todayat 1.30pm, followed by a wake at The Brierfield in Blackburn Road.
