Vandals strike AGAIN at Moss Bank Park

GARDENERS say they will not let vandals deter them from their hard work at a Bolton park.

The Friends of Moss Bank Park group was shocked to discover vandals had struck once again at the walled garden in Moss Bank Park.

On Tuesday morning, they arrived to discover a heavy cube of recycled stone, topped with an urn and bearing a weeping plant, had been tipped over.

The urn, situated in the paved circle in the centre of the garden, was cracked and they also discovered waterlilies had been stolen from the Rock Garden Pond.

David Butcher, aged 72, of Moss Lane, Smithills, said: “This is not the first time that villains have attacked the park but the friends are still adamant that they will not be discouraged and will continue their work in helping to look after the park.

“In fact, after their initial outrage on discovering the vandalism, the consensus was that they will redouble their efforts to keep improving the gardens."

In 2010, with the help of a Heritage Lottery grant, the group began its work to restore the garden to its former glory after it was closed for more than 10 years because it had become overgrown and a target for vandals.

Earlier this year, the friends group appeared on the BBC Two programme, The Great British Garden Revival, to show the progress they have made in restoring the rock garden.

Last July thieves stole a tree and plants from the park, including one planted in memory of community volunteer Fred Greenhalgh, aged 83, who died in 2011.

Earlier this year, roses were stolen from the rock garden.

The recent incident, believed to have happened on Sunday night, has been reported to police.

wanton vandalism - I hope someone casts a voodoo spell on the perpetrators. Sorry folk, what I was actually thinking is not printable.

Come on Bolton Council, spend a few bob on a parkie both here and at Queens Park. If you don't both locations will look worse than when you started your refurbishments. Please read and listen, Cliff, a parkie isn't just desirable it's essential!

It's sad that people want to ruin one of the prettiest locations in Bolton. Me and my daughter spend a lot of time in the gardens at moss bank park. It's sad how pathetic some people actually are. It's time they got a life. They really do need somebody patrolling the park. There's no point doing stuff to them when the world is full of scum who just wreck everything. Create a few new jobs and get it patrolled.

What a crass remark! The children from the estate are well mannered. We have had them down at the park to play tennis and bowls. Part of the solution would be for adults to stop turning a blind eye to yobbish youths. I only hope that when the tennis courts are re opened some provision will be made to give the local kids some free coaching. Also I wonder which adults are allowing their dogs to foul the bowling greens. I was brought up in a council house but unlike others who think they've made it because they live in a two bit semi I am very wary of chucking the first stone.

On a recent visit to the USA and Canada,we noticed park patrols on bicycles and also on motor cycles. Some of the patrols are police officers who back up civilian patrols.they patrol in groups of two and communicate by radio. These patrols are well identified by wearing uniforms stating who they are. They have the power to arrest trouble makers and give out summonses to any one consuming alcohol or drugs.I noticed the police patrols carried side arms, even in Canada.Obviously these patrols are expensive but to see all the families playing and picnicking in the parks seemed worth it.Another thing we noticed was the interaction between the public and the patrols, the patrols will sometimes hand out bottles of cold water and "popsicles" ice lollies to the children.$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$ is all it takes and a caring council of course.

Don't judge a book by its cover...stereotyping people who live on council estates. My first bachelor pad was on a council estate and the residents kept the area spotless and had pride in their homes and gardens. I now live in Spain and the cleanliness and maintenance of parks here is impressive. But then again the Police are allowed to lay the Law down better here.

Spot on.
When I was a kid in the 70's, there was a Parkie at Moss Bank and unaccompanied kids weren't allowed in the walled garden.
And it worked - the place was stunning.
Get it sorted, Morris!
