A HUGE new mosque is planned for Bolton.

Developers have submitted plans to Bolton Council for the building in Blackburn Road, Astley Bridge.

A plot of land just off Canning Street has been earmarked for a mosque, complete with a dome, minaret tower and 19 classrooms.

Those behind the proposals say the new building will bridge the gap between “negative perceptions” of Islam and the faith’s true meaning.

Taiyabah Islamic Centre — which already owns premises next to the site — is behind the scheme.

Artist’s impressions for the landmark building have been released as part of the planning application.

The development will cater for more than 1,000 prayer mats in the mosque building.

A madrasah facility — an Islamic educational centre — will contain 19 classrooms and there would be an on-site car park with 80 spaces if the plans are approved.

A spokesman for the Taiyabah Mosque said: “Our charity serves one of the oldest mosque communities in Bolton.

"The community is in need of a new facility that meets the day-to-day worship, education and community needs.

“We have been planning for this scheme for a number of years to ensure that the right development was aesthetically pleasing and functional.”

Taiyabah Mosque was established in 1967 and bought the former Congregational Sunday School in Blackburn Road — its current home — in 1988.

MORE:

In 2009, the mosque bought the neighbouring site with a view to future development.

David Cox, the project’s principal architect, said: “We are particularly proud to be part of a project which explores the nature of faith and community in a positive way.

“An important aspect of the brief provided was that the building should play a part in bridging the gap between the negative perceptions of Islam and the true meaning of Islam.

“We have explored this by arranging the building around a series of courtyard spaces so that the building presents an open and inviting aspect to surrounding streets in a gesture of welcome to passers-by.”

Existing retail units and garages will be demolished to make way for the new building if the plans are approved.

Cllr Guy Harkin, for Crompton, said: “I would be very surprised if there were any grounds for not accepting it.

“Providing there is good parking provision on the site I think it is a straightforward application.

“A lot of the people that go to the existing mosque are from nearby anyway and don’t drive much.”

Cllr Sufrana Bashir-Ismail, who also represents Crompton ward, added: “The community that uses the current facility in Blackburn Road has for many years wished for a purpose-built place of worship.

“This facility would be a fit-for-purpose 21st-century building that would cater for their community aspirations and become a valuable local focal point.

“When the site was acquired a consultation was undertaken to understand the needs of the local Muslim community, who have now become second and third generation residents.

“As a child, I attended the very first Muslim place of worship in the area, which still stands and is now functioning as a children’s nursery.

“This is an exciting project and I look forward to studying the full plans soon.”

The plans were submitted to Bolton Council and will now be assessed by planning officers.

The latest scheme comes weeks after planning permission was granted to a scheme to demolish the Sughra Mosque in Granville Street, Farnworth, and replace it with a new, three-storey place of worship.

I'll say it first; it looks beautiful but ultimately a waste of money. The community is well served by existing facilities without spending £millions on something like this.

My only objection is the traffic and parking, to say they are mostly local and walk, obviously don't drive past regularly. Double parking on yellow lines makes the A666 treachorous at the best of times, cars using the road as a rat race from Bolton to Blackburn at ridiculous speeds. This can only be safe if there are more than 80 spaces and strict parking restrictions enforced on the main road.

Why traffic wardens don't patrol here more at the moment is beyond me?

Come on Muslims - Let me see you come together and condemn this development. Let me see you stand up, collectively and say NO we don't want this. What we do want is for the money that would have been spent on this building to be donated to a local Bolton community project that brings together the community - a place were all are welcomed irrespective of race, creed, colour, religious persuasion etc.

Let me see you all stand up and be counted. Let me see you calling for community integration of the best kind.

This is your opportunity to come together and say NO to the Mosque but Yes to funding a community that is equal and working together.

B) Too large and imposing for the area.
C) Insufficent Parking - needs to be times what is provisioned.

D) this coupled with the 800 place boys school on Wolfenden Street represents an over development which will lead to traffic bedlam.

I do believe they are just re-furbishing an existing church no mention of a new build. Bolton Town Centre Church lovely building converted to apartments, rest my case.

The mosque is going to be paid for in a similiar way the one on daubhill was paid for. The locals will get together and donate according to their capacity. It might take some time but eventually the target will be reached. The one on daubhill was paid for by the muslims of bolton. I believe four businessmen got together and donated £50000 each to get the ball rolling. Thereafter the community chipped in. In one blessed night of ramadhan a total amount of £600 000 was pledged. Then within the next few weeks/months the total £3.5 million target was reached. A bride to be donated £10000 that night. She said she saved it for a extravagant wedding but soon changed her mind.

Well done lads more traffic onto Blackburn Road, I work in Crewe and my wife works in Bolton, my eldest daughter works in Heywood. I have to leave home @ 0600 hrs to start @ 0800 hrs, my daughter leaves @ 0730 hrs to start @ 0830 hrs and my wife leaves @ 0815 hrs and is lucky to get to the town centre for an 0900 hrs start.
Let the community have their mosque but make it a requirement that they should walk to their Mosque ( Bolton has a need to fulfil the requirements for reducing C02 pollution.)
Before people accusing me of being anti Muslim I am Bolton born and bred, I live near to a Primary school and most parents drive their children to their school despite living within walking distance of the place. Please try and encourage people to keep their cars off the road where possible, obviously taking any special needs into consideration.

Would someone enlighten me as to what goes on inside a Mosque?
Is it like a massive Community Centre or a School (classrooms)?
What is taught in there ?

If I asked for a Tour of the said Mosque, would I be allowed to, or is it against Islam to allow a Born Again Jedi in there.

Would any of the Posters who seem to know and support the Mosque tell me if its true that Women have a seperate part of the Mosque, and why are Heads to be covered and Feet to be un-covered?

I would'nt like to attend the new Farnworth Mosque.........you would leave a brand new pair of One-Tens on the doorstep and come away with a pair of Primarni Sandals.

What goes on inside a mosque? Usually muslims pray upto 5 times a day, in congregation.
What is taught in there? The quran and the arabic language is taught in the madrasa/mosaques. Other primary beliefs of the religion are taught, manners, ettiquetes, morals, ethics etc..... HATRED IS NOT TAUGHT (sorry to disappoint people),
If you want a tour? No problems at all, I would start by phoning the mosque and arrange a time.
Head and feet to uncovered? Head for a woman needs to be covered like in other religions (christianity, judaism). Feet doesnt have to be uncovered.

lmao!!! Yes you are allowed to see the mosque from the inside, you'll just need to ask for a tour. Women have a separate entrance as far as I know to attend.

The classes teach English (which some of you may want to have a look at before you start posting the rubbish on here, as long as you can read English that is) and Arabic Texts which cover all areas of the Religion as well as learning Arabic itself. I've had a tour myself so have seen all of this myself.

I left again with my own shoes on on each visit so I think so your One-Tens should be safe!

So a Christian woman would not need to use a separate entrance if she entered a mosque on an arranged tour? I believe if they demanded this the Mosque would be contravening female equality rules.

These people have businesses to run they haven't got time to walk. Just wondering where the extra cars are going to park on Blackburn Road as most of it has double yellow lines. 80 cars say 2 people per car is 160 people that's 840 people walking or prayer mats not used.
So either more people are going to arrive by car for which there are no spaces or so many prayer mats are not required.

I don't like all the scare mongering, stating that in 50 years were all doomed etc..... Its not helpfull to anyone.
