COULD this be the highest point in the UK at which football fans are flying the England flag during the World Cup?

Workers at Winter Hill are flying the St George’s Cross half way up the television mast — 1,500 ft above sea level.

The mast itself is 1,015 ft tall, meaning the flag could be nearly 2,000 ft above sea level.

The flag was spotted and snapped by reader Chris Sudlow.

Mr Sudlow, aged 65 from Westhoughton, noted the flag when he was walking his brother-in-law's dog on Winter Hill.

He said: "I just happened to look up and I saw the flag, I couldn't believe someone had managed to get it so high, I was very impressed.

"I think it is certainly the highest spot for an England flag in Lancashire, maybe even the country and I think it is fantastic that someone has put it up there to support our boys in Brazil."

The mast is one of the tallest structures of its kind in Europe and the highest television transmitting antenna in the UK.

Football fans in Bolton have gone World Cup crazy, with residents in Aldercroft Avenue, Breightmet, covering their street with flags, bunting and Three Lions banners.

England play Uruguay in a crucial World Cup match tomorrow at 8pm in Sao Paulo.

Mr Sudlow said he is confident of a win for England, predicting a 3-1 victory with a goal for under-pressure forward Wayne Rooney.

I'm sick of hearing rubbish like this nobody gets offended by the flags foreigners, Muslims or space aliens so I don't get why people are so defensive. The only time people get offended by flag waving is when there's some moron on the end of it spouting racist nonsense.

Nice one!

Well, I am certainly not guilty of the erection of this flag, as I don't like heights. Hat's off to the characters who put it there.

It echos a lot, fairly cold, lights alway up the inside, and last time I was in it in 2002 (only at the base) there was a bosuns chair as they'd decommissioned the lift.

It used to be one of the longest/highest single above ground lifts on the planet. I think modern H&S closed it.
