A SECOND driver has appeared in court charged with causing a crash on the East Lancs Road that claimed the lives of a young couple.

Steven Ward, aged 25, of South Avenue, Swinton, appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court this morning to face two charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

Ward, who wore a maroon hooded top and tracksuit bottoms, spoke only to confirm his name and address.

He appeared to walk into the dock with a limp and had cuts on his face.

Two men attended the short hearing to support Ward.

Mike Cahill, defending Ward, made no bail application as the defendant was remanded in custody and asked for the case to be sent to Manchester Crown Court.

John Montrose Cooper, chairman of the bench, adjourned the case and referred it to Manchester Crown Court.

Ward is the second driver to be charged over the crash; Carl David Wood, aged 27, of St James Street, Farnworth, was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving yesterday.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at Manchester Crown Court with Ward on July 8.

The charges relate to a car crash at about 5pm on Sunday, when 19-year-old Aaron Jones and his girlfriend, 22-year-old mother-of-one Amy Hobson, were killed.

Mr Jones died at the scene and his girlfriend died later in hospital.
