BOLTON’S popular Ironkids event is now fully booked.

All 2,250 places have been snapped up for the race on Saturday, July 19, making it once again the largest Ironkids event in the world.

The fun “run only” race, for three to 14 year olds, takes place the day before the famous Ironman UK triathlon in the town.

Bolton Council’s cabinet member for culture and youth, Cllr John Byrne, said: “We are thrilled to see the Ironkids event proving so popular once again this year and it is fast becoming as much of a highlight of the weekend as the Ironman UK triathlon itself.

“It’s a great family, fun day out which encourages young people to get involved in sport and improve their health.

“Everyone can get involved, from toddlers to teenagers, and if anyone has missed out on a place this year they can still enjoy a fantastic day out as part of the crowd, cheering on their family and friends.”

Organised by Ironman UK, in partnership with Bolton Council, the Ironkids race has grown in popularity since its first year in 2012.

There are various distances to run, according to age, ranging from 500 metres to 2,500 metres, and all the fun takes place in the streets around the town centre with all participants crossing the finishing line in Victoria Square under the iconic Ironkids and Ironman UK Finish Arch.

Last year’s event was a huge success with almost 2,000 children taking part, supported by family and friends.

The emphasis is on having fun and enjoying a healthy lifestyle that can be achieved by all ages.

All participants will receive a souvenir T-shirt and race medal.

Managing director of Ironman UK and Ireland, Kevin Stewart, said: “Ironkids has grown into an amazing start to the Ironman weekend.

“The atmosphere is electric in the town centre with thousands of kids, parents and spectators supporting children from as young as three, motivating them to enjoy sport through the experience of participating in a major sporting event.”

Registration takes place in The Market Place Shopping Centre from Wednesday, July 16 to Friday, July 18 at various times between noon and 7pm.
