HUNDREDS of balloons have been released in memory of a couple killed in a car crash on the East Lancashire Road.

The balloons in blue, pink and white were released by friends, family and colleagues of Amy Hobson, aged 22, a mum-of-one, and her boyfriend, 19-year-old Aaron Jones.

They were killed after the Vauxhall Corsa being driven by Mr Jones was involved in a crash with two Audis as he was turning onto the East Lancs Road at about 5pm on Sunday, June 22.

Horwich-born Mr Jones died at the scene and Miss Hobson died several hours later in hospital.

The balloons were released on Monday at the McDonald’s restaurant in Pendlebury, where the couple both worked. They had been together for 18 months.

Tags were attached to the balloons explaining that they had been released in memory of the couple to celebrate their lives. A picture of the couple was also on the tag.

One of the balloons was found in Leverhulme Park, Darcy Lever, by a 12-year-old girl.

A petition has also been launched since the couple died lobbying for traffic lights to be installed at the junction where the crash happened.

A Facebook group has been started called Traffic Lights Between Barton Road and the A5185 Lancaster Road junction.

Two drivers have been charged in connection with the crash and have been remanded in custody.

Carl Wood, aged 27, of St James Street, Farnworth, and Steven Ward, aged 25, of South Avenue, Swinton, have both been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

They are due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday, July 8.
