Crackdown on illegal off-road bikers

Police have drafted in officers specially to stop the illegal use of the of bikes in the north of Bolton.

The operation, condemaned Camenca, involves the police's motorcycle enforcement unit working in marked and unmarked vehicles to spot people on bikes.

Anyone caught using the vehicles "in an anti-social manner" can have their bike seized or be warned they will be taken if they are spotted being a nuisance again.

Det Insp Charlotte Cadden, from Bolton North Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Riding off road bikes in an anti-social manner is not only a nuisance for residents but also a danger to children playing outside and people generally.

“Through Operation Camenca police are seizing off-road bikes and quad bikes from people who cannot provide proof of ownership or insurance —the owners will not get them back, they will be crushed.

“Police will continue with high-visibility patrols and covert patrols to catch those blighting the lives of others.”

People can also help police by protecting themselves securing their property after a rise in theft of off-road bikes and scooters in Bolton.

A Yamaha 80cc was seized by police after the rider was seen driving it in Colchester Avenue, Breightmet, on June 15.

In Bolton South, a red quad bike was also spotted driving recklessly around the caravan park, in Hall Lane, Farnworth.

A man was spotted riding the quad bike but made off from police — it had been stolen from Lancashire.

Hot spot areas are being patrolled during peak times for the problems.

Signs have been posted around problematic places warning people they are breaking the law by using off-road bikes on the land.

Police are telling people to park in well lit areas and to record markings and modifications on their bikes to help police track down any bikes that are stolen.
