We bring you live updates from Bolton Council's planning committee meeting today. Among the applications being considered are:

  • A large mosque off Blackburn Road, including a dome, minaret tower and 19 classrooms.
  • A controversial five-bedroomed house in Lostock - before the planning committe for the thirteenth time as the developer tries to save it from a demolition order.
  • Plans for more than 300 new homes on a rundown industrial estate in Tonge Moor.
  • The meeting, which is due to start at 2pm, has been moved from the council chamber to the festival hall to accommodate the large number of people expected to attend because of interest in the Astley Bridge mosque.

I too have been following the articles about the mosque and have to say I am a little disgusted to read some of the comments. I accept the valid objections of parking, traffic and architecture. However, comments of not recognising your town because it is perceived a 'community has taken over' is appalling. I was born in Bolton, I am not white and will always see Bolton as my home. I work in Bolton and sadly probably serve some of you racist bigots. I thought Bolton got over its racist views in the 70s when white amateur teams refused to play with ethnic minority groups. I thought Bolton had evolved especially when folk enjoy tasting the delights of the sub-continent. What is most disappointing, some of these people probably live and work side by side to Muslims (in this particular context) and would never utter their real thoughts. The hypocrisy is what really gets me. It is a shame that those that maybe had valid objections were diluted within the racist onslaught on the Facebook group and on the BN website not to mention groups on other social networking sites. Well done BNP EDL Northwest Infidels you spoilt it for the locals who had real objections. It is time for change, acceptance and integration 😊

what a can of worms this is...

all we are left with now is utter chaos within the community. It may have been a better idea if the councillors had deferred the application and given some more thought to further consultation.

I can't see this ending well

I no longer recognise Bolton as the town I grew up in. I am neither racist nor have any fear/dislike/opinion about any religion. If you are muslim, jew, christian whatever, I respect you all equally and your right to worship your gods. However I didn't grow up in a town full of mosques and now I feel alien walking through some of the streets of Bolton. So where do I go when I no longer feel like I belong in my home town? How long will it be before there are no places left in this country where I can feel at home, where I can feel like I belong, where I can feel free to celebrate my own culture? The tides are turning in this country and some of us will swim and others will drown.

A quarter of the world felt the same way when we invaded and pillaged their lands and killed natives of those lands during our "Empire".
What goes around comes around I suppose.
Meeting was hijacked by a hard core probably not even from Bolton.

We all know this mosque was going to get passed, there could have been 10,000 signatures against it and it still would have got planning permission from Bolton Council.

I do not condone the behaviour of the idiots in the video, these kinds of people are just thugs who think the only answer is shouting, swearing and trying to show how big they are!

Bolton is supposed to be developing as a town, but it is getting worse, I urge anyone who can depart do so now for pastures new, because that is certainly what I am considering doing over the next 12 months.

An old pub on Holmeswood Road, Great Lever is now a Mosque called ‘Masjid-e-Taqwa’ on Friday prayers the chaos and traffic around Holmeswood Road / Lever Edge Lane is horrendous, any emergency services would not stand a chance to get down Holmeswood Road, and this is despite the Mosque having a large car park. The same use to happen at ‘Makka Mosque’ on Grecian Crescent on Friday afternoon, people using the Mosque would park anywhere without a care in the world for residents that were living in the area. No doubt this will happen with the new Mosque on Blackburn Road.

Could someone tell me why Great Lever needs FIVE MOSQUES within a quarter of a mile radius! And this is not including many of the others in Great Lever or Deane & Derby.

    We have…

    Masjid-e-Taqwa - Holmeswood Road
Aleef Mosque - 8 Higher Swan Lane, Bolton, BL3 3EQ
Darul Quran Mosque - 458 Bridgeman Street, Bolton, BL3 6TJ
Makka Mosque - Grecian Crescent, Bolton, BL3 6QU
Zakariyya Mosque - Peace Street, Bolton, BL3 5LJ

Surely Bolton has enough places for Muslims to worship, without adding more to the town, is a super Mosque really the answer?

It’s purely disgraceful to allow this application to be passed when so many people objected. I am no longer proud to be associated with this town.

Traffic problem on Blackburn Road is created by the mosque is lie. Over the years big builders built thouseds of houses all over Belmont Road and
Blackburn Road up to other end of Bromley Cross. Councillor Walsh approved all those house plans from big tory donors. He did not give dam about traffic. People of Astley Bridge had traffic problem when Walsh's Tory party refused to extend St. Peters Way A666 from Kay Street to Bromley Cross in 1980's. Nobody saying any thing about extention at Warburton Bakery which brought scores of big trucks and staff vehicals in the area. Warburton don't even employ local people because their skin is dark. Local have to suffer Warbi's Carbon ommision night and day for years. No protest there.

I think your statement about Warburtons not employing people with dark skin could be considered slander.
