A CAR thief who drove at twice the speed limit and crashed head-on into a people carrier — injuring a gran, a mum and her two daughters — tested positive for cannabis and cocaine, a court heard.

David Barrington, who was yesterday jailed for three years and four months, ploughed into Janet Mundy’s Ford Galaxy after reaching 60mph in a 30mph zone.

Julian Goode, prosecuting at Bolton Crown Court, said Barrington had stolen a BMW 323i from a Radcliffe house on March 14 last year and was seen driving at excessive speeds at about 8.30pm.

Witness David Wheelan described the driving as “crazy, unbelievable and scary” prior to the crash, the court was told.

The BMW crashed head-on with Ms Mundy’s car in Ringley Road, Stoneclough.

Barrington, aged 26, of Coronation Road, Radcliffe, was found slumped over the central console of the car, the court was told.

The Ford Galaxy was filled with smoke and the front window shattered.

Janet Mundy suffered a broken pelvis, a fractured elbow and numerous broken bones. She spent more than four weeks in hospital.

Grandmother Sylvia Mundy broke her fibula and tibia in one leg and also suffered a broken ankle.

Janet Mundy’s daughters, aged nine and 11, suffered minor injuries but one girl was said to have suffered from post traumatic stress disorder because of the crash.

A victim impact statement from Sylvia Mundy, read to the court, said: “Our lives have been destroyed.”

She suffered months in pain and is no longer able to cook without sitting on a stool.

Barrington broke his left leg and suffered a head injury, which has caused him memory loss.

The defendant, who has a catalogue of previous convictions, had no recollection of the incident. He tested positive to cannabis and cocaine.

Henry Blackshaw, defending, said Barrington had apologised directly to Sylvia Mundy after seeing her in the court room. He was said to be very remorseful.

Barrington admitted two counts of dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance and without a driving licence. He was disqualified from driving for four years.

Judge Elliot Knopf, sentencing, said: “Driving in that sort of manner is a very serious social evil.”
