A DEAF student has made his mark on a wall as part of a revamp of a centre.

Dean Chester, was given the task of painting a new mural within the grounds of the Centre for Deaf People in Bark Street, which offers social activities and support for people with hearing difficulties.

The painting, which is in the reception area, depicts the history of the deaf in Bolton from 1868 until the present day.

As well as a logo Mr Chester designed for the centre’s ‘Lift Us Up’ appeal as it looks to install a new lift in the building so disabled people can access their facilities.

Mr Chester, from Burnden, who is studying sports development and coaching at the University of Bolton, said he was pleased to be able to give something back to the centre.

The 23-year-old — who hopes to be either a children’s sports coach or a scuba diving instructor — added: “I started the painting in May, coming down twice a week to work on it, and hope to finish it in the next few days.

“I’ve been coming to the centre for a long time, and in the past it was different from now. It used to be about the sports clubs but now it’s more about the support.”

People from as far away as Preston and Manchester travel to Bolton to visit the Deaf Society to take advantage of the numerous social events and sports clubs at the centre.

Alison Parker, a member of the staff at the centre said she was delighted Mr Chester was able to help out with the painting.

She added: “We wanted something where the history of the deaf community in Bolton was recognised in the centre. Everyone has been adding their own ideas about what should appear on the wall. It’s been really nice that it’s been so interactive.”

The Deaf Society was named one of the Mayor’s charities for 2014/15, and is looking to raise around £50,000 to refurbish its centre.
