A THEATRE group will stage a moving play about life on the frontline to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of World War One.

On The Go Theatre Company is just one of the groups taking part in a special event in Westhoughton tomorrow afternoon.

The over 50s group will perform Words of War in the drama studio at Westhoughton High School and there will also be music from The Houghton Weavers and Wingates Band.

The event has been organised by Westhoughton Town Council in memory of the town’s fallen and from the wider world.

It will also feature singalongs, hymns, poetry readings, prayers and primary school children reading out the names of the 219 servicemen from the Westhoughton area who are known to have died.

The public was invited to apply for free tickets for the commemoration which have now been allocated.

On The Go’s play has been specially written for the commemoration event by members Josie Byrne and Kath Bateman and features about 15 cast members.

Judith Whittle, a member for three years, said: “It’s quite a moving play, it’s about going to war and then the drama of being in the trenches.”

The group has performed other plays including Cotton Queens, inspired by life inside Lancashire cotton mills.

World War One started on July 28, 1914 and Britain joined the war on August 4, 1914.

It claimed the lives of at least 6,000 men a day and, during the course of the war, nine million soldiers were killed and another 21 million injured.
