WHEN charity fundraiser Kath Richardson took part in a personal challenge of a lifetime, she knew fighting her fears would help people less fortunate than herself.

So when she and her husband Dave, who run the Good News for Romania Charity, were able to buy a minibus for needy children and families in Romania she knew she had done the right thing.

Mrs Richardson, who lives in Smithills, had taken part in a sponsored zip wire challenge in Snowdonia — despite being terrified of heights.

The challenge was 500 feet above the ground and, at times, Mrs Richardson was travelling at 100mph.

The 64-year-old said: “I am thrilled I managed to do it.”

She and Mr Richardson, aged 65, have now picked up the keys for the minibus that will take underprivileged children to camp in Romania, as well as helping families in need of transport and ensuring children can get to Sunday School.

Mrs Richardson said: “Occasionally the children are taken out for a pizza paid for by Good News for Romania, so the minibus will make this so much easier.”

Good News for Romania pays for Romanian youngsters from extremely poor families to enjoy a camping holiday each year, as well as paying for vital medical and food supplies and clothing.

Mr and Mrs Richardson, who adopted daughter Madi — now aged 22 — from a Romanian orphanage, have fundraised tirelessly to help needy families, getting enormous support from the people of Bolton.

Mrs Richardson said: “We are so grateful to everyone who helps us with our fundraising. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to buy this mini bus. It is going to make a massive difference to the families in Romania.”
