A ROW has broken out after claims that Horwich would be better off out of Bolton — and becoming part of Chorley.

The leader of Chorley Council, Cllr Alistair Bradley, says he is flattered to hear that some people in Horwich would consider cutting ties with Bolton and forming a new authority with neighbouring Chorley.

Cllr Bradley said: “It’s very flattering that residents in Horwich would like to join with Chorley if we became a unitary authority and it shows people outside the borough can see that we are an ambitious council who want to do what’s best for its residents.”

Rivalry between Bolton and neighbouring Chorley came to a head earlier this year after a publicity stunt saw Chorley light up the famous Rivington Pike landmark, which borders both towns, in red lighting to promote their Choose Chorley campaign and attract businesses to the area.

Following this, fitness industry business ServiceSport UK left its Bolton base and re-located in Chorley stating that the council there had offered them more support than Bolton.

Cllr Bradley added: “Since the lighting of Rivington Pike as part of our Choose Chorley campaign we have had a business relocate to Chorley from Horwich and now it seems the whole town wants to move.

"Either that or they just want the Pike back in the boundaries of where they live.”

Horwich resident Mick Stevens suggested the town should break away from Bolton during a meeting of Horwich Town Council.

Chorley Council recently announced plans to potentially break away from Lancashire City Council and form its own unitary authority. A referendum could be held as early as next year.

Bolton Council leader Cliff Morris said it was an “exaggeration” to suggest the whole of Horwich wanted to leave Bolton.

He said: “It seems to be one person who has suggested it and if he wants to leave he can move to Chorley.

"We have no intention of letting any part of our borough go at any stage - we work very well with the people of Horwich — and them with us.”

Cliff Morris has absolutely no idea about the people of Horwich! And in that statement he has made, it shows how much he cares about the people of Horwich! Telling people to leave!!! Maybe we should have a vote on if Horwich residents want to stay or leave Bolton. We get absolutely nothing from Bolton apart from houses being built and leisure facilities taken away! All Horwich is, is a cash cow for Bolton council. Never mind telling other people to leave, Morris should leave ASAP. With his attitude he should not be the leader of a scout gruop never mind a Council!!

Once again Cliff Morris highlights his own ignorance of what the people of Bolton (specifically Horwich this time!) both want and need.

After watching the degeneration of Bolton over the past 10/15 years I wouldn't trust my pet fish with this current leadership.

If Cliff Morris is so confident, let's put it to a referendum, I know which way I would vote! (Also rather childish to tell the one person who's stood up and voiced his opinion to move if he doesn't like it!)

I'm a Horwich lad, but have lived in Blackrod for 25 years (and very happy I am here too, as well). And you know what? I'd give ANYTHING to see Blackrod be allowed to leave the absolute sh*t hole that is Bolton, with all its mosques, scallies, thieves, druggies, boarded-up ghetto of a town centre and rotten-to-the core corrupt council led by that utter buffoon Morris. Please, PLEASE let us chuck our lot in with Wigan, or Chorley, or Tunbridge bloody Wells for that matter, so long as it's not Bolton! And let the people of Horwich join us along the way...because I'm sure that they, along with me, are thoroughly ashamed to admit they're associated with Bolton whenever we're asked where we come from.
Bolton is a rotting, putrid corpse of a town that should be buried or cremated as soon as possible.

If they want to leave let them leave. I work in Horwich and to those Bolton bashers who are properly slating the town, just take a look around at the place you live. Horwich is hardly the Ritz. Infact when I walk around the place a couple of things spring to mind such as, banjo dual, Wrong Turn and The Hills Have Eyes. Its only a run down road selling tat anyway. Cut them loose if that is what they want, its not a big deal in all honesty.

As a resident of Horwich I would definitely vote to leave Bolton given the chance. Many Horwich people resent being considered a suburb of Bolton and it is obvious that Bolton council funds are not making their way back into the Horwich community. I hate to say it but I am ashamed to tell people I live in the Bolton area - it is such a horrible down trodden place these days. I am sure Chorley council wont be perfect but they at least have a sense of pride, making their town a pretty and safe as possible. Bolton in contrast is a scary run down eyesore.

I was born in Horwich and currently live here quite happily. People can knock the place if they wish but it is a beautiful town with fabulous countryside on it's doorstep and a rich heritage going back centuries. I'm very proud to live in Horwich the town of my ancestors, but I would vote to leave Bolton and join Chorley without hesitation. Bolton is an embarrassment and it's council a joke and I would jump at any chance to distance myself from it. Maybe the people of Horwich should be left to decide the Bolton / Chorley argument?

I work up and down the country, if you think that Bolton is the only sinking ship you are sadly mistaken. What you see happening here is happening everywhere, don't be so naive to think that being a district of Chorley, Wigan or anywhere else for that matter will make a difference because it wont!

You can not just build houses everywhere and anywhere. Horwich already has a massive range of housing stock and full to capacity schooling. What Horwich doesn't have at present is the sound assessment and ability to deliver long term infrastructure, schooling and protection of playing fields, recreation green places and built heritage which is what the people of Horwich want and are not getting from Bolton. Middlebrook and other minor shopping complexes are stifling off Bolton town centre.

Farnworth for Wigan Council please; coming from a Boltonian born n bred and Wanderers fan. The hatred of so many towns-folk towards a Council leader- Clifford Morris - must be unprecedented throughout the United Kingdom.

I predict the demise of Cllr Morris will result in street parties, effigy burning and carnivals throughout the borough.
Except maybe most parts of Halliwell, Crompton, Daubhill and Deane, and about 80% of Ladybridge.

The day Bolton is rid of a Labour Council is the day Boltonians will start to feel pride in our town.

From an ex-Labour voter and Union member.
