HAPLESS scrapper Lewis O'Boyle — or Boyle as he is known in the yard — has emerged as the unlikely star of a new fly-on-the-wall TV documentary.

BBC One show Scrappers — which was broadcast on Thursday and last night — follows the highs and lows of husband and wife team Terry and Lyndsay Walker as they run Bolton scrapyard Metro Salvage.

Viewers have already been introduced to the wonderful staff employed at the yard, including Boyle, who Terry is trying to mentor after he left school at 14 with no qualifications.

The 19-year-old told viewers: “I want my own yard called Boyle’s Breakers, a scrapyard like this.”

But his lesson on monstrous crusher Gloria the Grab caused major panic, scattering his colleagues to the edge of the yard.

In Thursday’s first episode, Lyndsay reacted with fury when Terry spent the week’s payroll at a car auction on stock.

He promised his wife he would curb his spending in Friday’s second show and is desperate to make the business more profitable to impress his wife.

The couple’s daughter Jemma Burns, aged 29, who lives in Heaton, works part- time for the business looking after the accounts.

The mother-of-three said: “It was good — but it was weird seeing them on TV because I see them every day.

“I’m so proud of them. They have worked really hard for what they have got.

“It gives people the chance to see the real-life version of it. Every day, you don’t know what’s going to come round the corner.

"Working with your husband, they have got a business together, they live together, they are married — it’s hard.

"The comments we’ve had have been mainly positive, but we’ve had a few negative ones from people — people from down south who don’t like the way we talk.”

Viewers will have to stay tuned to find out if Boyle keeps his job. The third instalment of Scrappers, on August 15 at 8.30pm on BBC One, sees Terry having an open day to celebrate Metro Salvage’s 21st birthday.

brilliant tv viewing, a family run business giving people in life a second chance. They may get negative comments on our accent but if thats all people can complain about in this day and age, they must be doing something right. Boyle is such a livewire on the show. I cant wait for next weeks episode

Couldn't agree more. The owner might be a bit of a rough diamond but there aren't many who'd look after people who've had problems in their life like he has. Good on you!

I really enjoyed it too. All seem very down to earth! And if it is the case that they do employ the unemployables then good on them! Better in a job than living on handouts. Very funny programme and very funny people, some of whom I grew up with!

Hopefully it will be a regular on Chanel 4!

A regular on Channel 4???? Erm it's broadcast on the BBC., and BBC 1 at that.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. What a great collective of misfits, wackaloons, tearaways and vagabonds, and all in one spot!

Even with their history and backgrounds, how could anybody not take to 'em.

Let's hope there is mileage in a few more series of this one.

Well done to the good old BBC.

Cannot say I watched it, but being a person who has to drives up and down waterloo st, calvin st, kay st, numerous times due to work , SIX DAYS EVERY WEEK, I WILL GIVE YOU MY TAKE ON THESE so called loveable rogues. Im sure bbc never filmed outside the yard and saw the IM ALRIGHT JACK attitude of these friendly lads. Let me give you all a heads up on what really happens on HAPPY STREET.
Wagon from Poland drives up waterloo st, thug with 39 wrongly spelt tattoes walks into middle of road. arms up, he is now a traffic officer, nobody is moving any way until Herman has dropped or picked up his load of dodgy gear. Wagon cannot get in yard as numerous cars are parked at the so called exit, right by the café, You cannot get past , if you attempt to , Mr Thug walks up to your car and spits obscenities, after the people who have rightly, wrongly parked there car by the café been told what to do f. off onto the royal mail car park next door, Herman, after 12 attempts manages to reverse his wagon load into the yard. By this time, mr thug/traffic official is falsely smiling at every one and thanking them for not having to threaten them, if you get my drift.
Its tv people, its false. Don't believe the hype, nwa

I find it very fake and contrived, and the people in it don't have the acting chops to carry it off. They ran out of money and only got enough for the wages at the last minute? Yeah, right. Boyle might go to prison for riding an off-road bike? We'll see. (If they were that bothered they'd sack him for weighing in company property for £17 - straight up theft). And the guy sacked for drinking? There he is in today's paper doing the ice bucket challenge, so what's the betting he miraculously gets his job back next week when Terry returns?
