IT was hard to escape Bolton on the television on Friday night.

As Helen Wood won Big Brother, Scrappers — a fly on the wall documentary following the lives of workers at Bolton scrapyard Metro Salvage — continued on BBC One.

The episode saw “lovable rogue” Lewis O’Boyle get in trouble with the law, while scrapyard boss Terry Walker organised a family fun day to boost the profile of his business.

The show has even been compared to Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights because of its down-to-earth, larger-than-life Bolton characters.

Over on Channel 4, Harwood football coach Ryan Hardwidge struggled to impress the public on the Singer Takes It All.

The 27-year-old former Thornleigh pupil belted out hit song Pompeii — by English rock band Bastille.

But reaction from the audience was mixed and he only made it into the “gold zone” for a few seconds, failing to beat popular contestant Steve Dorset.
