A BOLTON school is honouring the sacrifices made by soldiers in World War One by putting up a flagpole and planting poppies.

Children at Smithills School in Smithills Dean Road looked at how to commemorate the centenary anniversary of the start of the conflict.

Members of the school council decided that the flagpole, accompanied by a plaque was a fitting tribute, with poppy seeds sprinkled around the site which will grow into a lasting tribute.

Headteacher Alec Cottrill said: “I am so proud of the students and their recognition of how their lives have been made possible by the sacrifices of others.”

Pupil Emily Affleck, aged 12 said: “World War One should not be forgotten because people died for our freedom and suffered terrible conditions.”
