A PENSIONER was left with a broken jaw after he was punched in the face by a "cowardly" road rage attacker.

Peter Stringer, aged 71, was walking his mother-in-law’s dog along Old Clough Lane, Walkden, when a black Mercedes saloon car sped past, and the victim signalled for him to slow down.

Mr Stringer was standing near the junction of Spring Clough Avenue when the driver stopped the car and reversed towards him.

He leapt out of the car and punched Mr Stringer hard in the face, breaking his jaw and knocking him unconscious.

The man then got back in his car and drove off, leaving the victim injured and alone on the pavement.

Det Con Paul Davies said: “The victim has been left understandably shaken by this unprovoked assault and I believe the injuries would have been more severe had the victim not fallen onto a grass verge.

“The offender has thought nothing of fleeing the scene and did not even call an ambulance.

“Unfortunately no witnesses to this assault have come forward and the victim came too on the grass verge alone, with no one around to check on his welfare.

“It was a cowardly act and I ask for anybody with information about this incident or think they may have seen a vehicle matching that description driving erratically in the area at the time to contact police.”

The attack happened on Sunday at about 7.30pm.

The suspect is an Asian man, aged about 30, between 5ft 8in and 5ft 9in tall, with an athletic build.

He was said to have has a sallow complexion, short, black hair and a short, trimmed beard. He was wearing smart casual clothes.

Anyone with information can call police on 0161 8565097 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Okay, it's an overreaction but it wasn't unprovoked. At this stage we only have Mr Stringer's description of what this 'signal for him to slow down' was too. I highly doubt that the punch was thrown without any words being exchanged either.

If you need to question my post then maybe you shouldn't be allowed to comment on an open forum such as this. However, just for the avoidance of doubt, I would add the following: your comments are insensitive, they are prejudiced and they are speculative. You make assumptions on the basis of what? An elderly gentleman has been hospitalised by a thug and you suggest that his injuries were somehow deserved. You really are either extremely gormless or the ideal person for the job vacancy mentioned above.

Your remarks are offensive and hurtful to the chap that was hit and also to any other person walking his dog in this free at the moment land we live in. It wasnt so long ago we had another man walking his dog left in a coma for weeks who had been attacked from behind. Saying and suggesting are two entirely different things. Again I will try to explain things to you but this is the last time I intend to waste on you, ok?

" Okay, it's an overreaction but it wasn't unprovoked." If something is provoked then the reaction can often be justified. How do you know the reaction was provoked? Maybe you should forward your evidence to the investigating officer?

"I highly doubt that the punch was thrown without any words being exchanged either." Why is this?

You state that the assault was provoked and you doubt that the punch was thrown without an exchange of words. Therefore, you suggest, not say, that the assault was deserved.

Hope that makes things easier to understand.

"The victim has been left understandably shaken by this unprovoked assault"

Okay, it's an overreaction but it wasn't unprovoked. At this stage we only have Mr Stringer's description of what this 'signal for him to slow down' was too. I highly doubt that the punch was thrown without any words being exchanged either.
Many a rural village is short of an idiot. Maybe you should submit an application or two? Comments like that would make you an ideal candidate!
Instead of ****, can you explain what problem you had with the comment please?
If you need to question my post then maybe you shouldn't be allowed to comment on an open forum such as this. However, just for the avoidance of doubt, I would add the following: your comments are insensitive, they are prejudiced and they are speculative. You make assumptions on the basis of what? An elderly gentleman has been hospitalised by a thug and you suggest that his injuries were somehow deserved. You really are either extremely gormless or the ideal person for the job vacancy mentioned above.
Why is it a problem that comments here are "insensitive"? We're (mostly) grown-ups here. Sheesh...

I didn't say his injuries were deserved, in fact I *actually* said it was an "overreaction" - did you misunderstand that bit? Gormless indeed....

Goodness me...

I didn't say his injuries were "deserved", I didn't suggest that his injuries were "deserved". I said quite the opposite when *saying* that it was an overreaction. I know the reaction was provoked because the provocation is detailed in the story, as previously explained. The provocation does not justify the reaction, but it doesn't have to - it's still provocation. Look up the word "provoke" in the dictionary if you need to.

"Therefore, you suggest, not say, that the assault was deserved"

That is entirely an interpretation that has happened in your own head, which has required you to completely disregard the bit where I *said* that it was an "overreaction". Next time, try to argue against what I *said*, rather than what you think I "suggested".

No need for road rage. Driver's need to understand each other these days as road's are busy and busy. We need to slow down and give way to drivers and pedestrians if safe to do so. As for what happened to this 71 old guy its just not on. Even if the driver was provoked he should have known better than to punch out a pensioner. He needs to be held accountable for he has done no excuse.
