A DRIVER is on the run after crashing a BMW into a parked car and smashing through a garden wall  — leaving an injured woman in the back seat.

The grey BMW smashed into a parked silver Renault Clio in Tong Road, Little Lever, at about 11.15am this morning.

The driver of the BMW and another male passenger fled the wreckage, abandoning two female passengers.

The impact of the crash is believed to have shunted the parked car down the road, while the BMW smashed into the front garden of a house, taking down the wall and damaging wrought iron fencing on a neighbouring property.

The North West Air Ambulance was scrambled, landing in Victory Park, but was not needed and paramedics took the woman to hospital.

Police shut the road for an hour as emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the incident.

A police spokesman said a woman was taken to hospital with a fractured pelvis.

Nearby residents said the road was an accident waiting to happen, and a petition had already been started calling for traffic calming measures.

Eric Hyde, from Little Lever, said: "This was an accident waiting to happen.

"The traffic situation in Tong Road has got a lot busier over the years.

"Cars go round the corner far too fast and anything coming from Bolton turning into Victory Road is at serious risk of a crash."

A neighbour said: “You hear tyres screeching and I have seen motorists trying to control their vehicle.

“You are always thinking 'will a car crash into my wall?'

“A car crashed into a garden wall last year.”

Former councillor Sean Hornby, who saw the aftermath of the accident, said: “Something needs to be done.

"Had the crash happened just two hours earlier there would have been parents and children on the foothpath taking children to school.

"It could have been a lot worse and this road will get busier.”
