THIS was no ordinary ice-bucket challenge.

The internet trend was taken to new heights in Great Lever when a JCB was filled with ice water and tipped over more than 20 people to raise money for Bolton Hospice.

Organiser Vas Vekaria said: “Family and friends took part in the challenge, and some of the men, not me though, wore mankinis .

“We all brought a change of clothing with us, and it was a lot of fun.

“It took 20 minutes to fill up the JCB with a hose and we had a number of big splashes with people taking part throughout the day.”

He added: “We all brought clothes with us so we could dry off after taking part!”

Mr Vekaria, of Lever Edge Lane, Great Lever, said they opted to do the ice-bucket challenge for Bolton Hospice which cared for his auntie, Kanta Patel, who died at the age of 59 following a long battle with cancer in 2012.

She died in Bolton Hospice.

Since then her family have raised money in her memory for the hospice, taking part in events including Midnight Memories.

The grandmother ran K&R Newsagents in Morris Green Lane with her husband Ramesh Patel.

The stunt took place at Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Great Lever with the last people being soaked just after 4pm.

Pub-goers enjoyed a raffle with top prizes including iPads, and Bolton Wanderers signed memorabilia.

Mr Vekaria, aged 37, said: “Ash Hire loaned us the JCB and Marie Brindle helped to organise it as well.

“The pub are always great very supportive.”

Mr Vekaria, who runs Lever Edge Convenience Store, added: “We wanted to do the ice-bucket challenge for a local cause, which we support.

“To date we have raised £20,000 for Bolton Hospice.

“This has been a really good day. We are hoping to have raised between £1,000 and £1,500 for the hospice.”
