BREW done it! Charity champions raised thousands of pounds across Bolton by serving up thousands of cuppas as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Dozens of schools and hundreds of individuals, businesses and organisations put on the special events yesterday in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Bolton Mayor Cllr Martin Donaghy led the way locally in the national charity drive by holding a coffee morning in the Town Hall.

Devonshire Road Primary School in Heaton was one of many schools to have shown its support for the charity — with parents invited into school by children to enjoy a hot drink.

Lesley Allanson, who organised the event, said: “We were busy all morning. Parents were invited in and children came to join them.

“Hot drinks were served to parents while children were given squash and we had an abundance of cakes and biscuits donated by the parents, some of whom had baked them. There was also a raffle and a children’s second-hand book sale. Last year we raised £550 and are expecting to raise in excess of that this year.”

Keen fishing enthusiasts found themselves enjoying a hot cuppa while taking part in their sport at Curlys Fishery in Horwich.

And there was a party atmosphere at Marks and Spencer in Middlebrook where customers were invited in for a coffee and staff put on fun and games for children.

Regional managers ending their marathon 185-mile cycle ride got a warm welcome as they arrived at the store to a fanfare of applause, music and banners.

Jade Pritchard, manager of the in-store coffee shop, said: “It has been a really good day, a good atmosphere and everyone has been so generous.”

Marks and Spencers is an official sponsor of the morning.

A record-breaking amount of £1,270 was raised by the residents at Kingsbury Court — a sheltered accommodation scheme in Bolton.

Resident Mavis Haworth, aged 81, said: “There was lots going on, the residents organise the coffee morning every year, and this year we have outshone ourselves. It is the most we have ever raised, we are very pleased with the amount.”
