Bolton was given a Yorkshire makeover when television cameras rolled into town.

The town centre became Harrogate train station yesterday when TV crews filmed BBC One’s hit romantic drama The Last Tango in Halifax.

Filming of the drama’s third series, took place in a wet and windy Cheadle Square, behind Le Mans Crescent.

Train station signs were put up around the square. Actress Sarah Lancashire returned to Bolton having visited the town during the school summer holidays to film scenes at Bolton School.

Cllr Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton Council, said: “We’re very fortunate in Bolton to have a magnificent civic backdrop in the town centre that seems to appeal to filmmakers and TV production companies, plus the added bonus of being surrounded by stunning countryside, and as such we have hosted numerous filming requests over the years.

“We’re pleased to be able to facilitate filming for the third series of Last Tango in Halifax, which is an extremely popular programme. A lot of filming has taken place already in Yorkshire, but we’re happy to add our own Bolton stamp on the series.”

As well as using Cheadle Square and Queen Street to recreate a railway station, the production company has filmed in Queens Park, Mere Hall and at the Last Drop Village, so viewers will have plenty of local scenes to look out for.

Cllr Morris added: “Residents enjoy seeing their home town on screen. It’s nice to raise the profile of Bolton in this way.”

The first two series of Last Tango in Halifax, which follows the lives of two childhood sweethearts reunited after 60 years, have been a huge hit, leading to the programme winning the prestigious 2013 Drama BAFTA.

The third series will return to BBC One later this year.
