HE’S taken selfies with Power Rangers outside Buckingham Palace, thousands of feet in the air above Paris and even gatecrashed a wedding in Benidorm for a snap.

Now Blackrod designer Paul Barnes has finished his ‘Stranger Selfie September’ challenge, and raised hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research.

The 34-year-old tasked himself with taking a picture with someone he didn’t know every day in September, to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

He says he only hoped to raise £200 through the challenge, but ended with a whopping total of £477.50 — and inspired two other people to follow in his footsteps.

Together, Bromley Cross resident Lucy Openshaw, who chose to support mental health charity Mind, and Sheffield student Sara Patel, fundraising for teenager suicide cause Papyrus, have raised almost £1,000.

Paul said: “I’m well chuffed. I only put my target as £200, and now it’s almost at £500 and I was never expecting anyone else to join us.

“My favourite was crashing a wedding while I was in Benidorm. A Spanish couple were getting married by the sea on a veranda, and as I was walking past I went down and interrupted the photographer to ask if they wouldn’t mind having a photo.

“There’s only been positives during this experience. It gets people talking, it gets me out meeting people and parts of it have felt like a social experiment — you get a feel of what to say and how to come across when you approach a person.”

Paul said he hopes to start a ‘chain reaction’ of people taking up the challenge to raise money for their chosen charity, through the power of social media.

He will join Lucy and Sara at the Tesco Extra by the Middlebrook on Sunday, October 12, from 11am for a ‘super selfie session’, taking as many snaps with strangers as possible.
