JOURNALISM student Heather Nelson landed a massive scoop — that was even read by the prime minister.

The 18-year-old, from Over Hulton, was delighted when she found out David Cameron had read her interview with popstar Nicole Scherzinger on a website.

Heather, who is studying broadcast journalism at the University of Leeds, was one of a handful young people chosen to take part in a first summer school to train aspiring journalists at News UK headquarters — home to some national papers.

Heather said: “I applied because I knew I wanted to enter a career in journalism but I didn’t quite have the experience to know exactly what it would be like to be a journalist.

"The News Academy itself provided a week’s worth of intensive training which I knew would be the perfect opportunity for me to take.

“I have always loved writing, whether its fiction or non-fiction, and have always been interested in current affairs so to be a journalist seemed to be the perfect job for me to have.”

She added: “We had some great questions to ask Nicole such as about future plans, her career so far, her past and even Lewis (Hamilton).

“We met Nicole after her photoshoot with MissGuided and she was so lovely to talk to.

“She answered all of our questions and engaged with us— and even told me I looked like Keira Knightley and Winona Ryder.”

Heather added: “My favourite bit, aside from interviewing the amazing Nicole Scherzinger, was seeing the final product at the end, the 16-page newspaper us 19 students created from scratch. Everybody was so talented and easy to work with.

“Writing up my interview with Nicole Scherzinger and seeing it come to life on page, and read by David Dinsmore, Editor of the Sun, was truly amazing and for me, was the best part of the week.

“The website, which the 19 students have continued to carry on with, has been read by David Cameron himself.”

During the week, Heather was given tips from national journalists including interview skills from Gemma Calvert and columnist Trevor Cavanagh.

Heather said: “It may sound like a cliche, but the week was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that was life-changing and opened many doors for me.”
