VANDALS smashed up a Deane community centre — and helped themselves to hot dogs while they were inside.

Volunteers have spent hours clearing up the mess at Sutton Estate Community Centre in Addington Road after the yobs broke in through the fire escape doors.

They made off with two iPod docking stations, a silver Coca Cola mini fridge, and a toastie maker after going on the rampage.

Kirsty Molloy, who volunteers at the centre, said she could not understand why anyone would want to trash the facility.

She said: “It’s the worst thing, it’s not fair on the kids who use the centre. It looks like they have taken the hot dogs and they threw sugar and biscuits all over the place.

“They destroyed the building and broke the fire doors by forcing them open, so they will need replacing.

“There’s no funding for the club at all and it is staffed by young volunteers.

“We are trying our very best to improve the local community and get the kids what is needed, and give them a place to go after school, then people come along and break in in and spoil it.”

The centre is very popular in the area and is used by a children’s club, a dance club and a Slimming World group.

Kirsty says they now want to throw a Halloween party at the centre to remind the community what they are trying to achieve.

She added: “We’re going to decorate the club for the party, starting from 6pm on October 31 and open it to the whole community.

“We want people to realise what we do, get them more involved and show the vandals that they haven’t won.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the centre should log on to the club’s Facebook page, Sutton-estate community centre.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “This community centre is well used by the community and popular with lots of young people in the area. We understand that that the burglary and criminal damage will cause concern among residents. If anyone has any information about those responsible, they should contact the police on 101.
