FAMILIES from a street in Daubhill have become the stars of a new book which won a prestigious award presented by Phoenix Nights star Justin Moorhouse.

Neighbours behind the Vernham Walk Family Album were crowned Community Project Group of the Year at the Impact Awards for their book, which features personal photographs and life stories from residents.

The awards, presented by funnyman Justin, who starred in Peter Kay's famous Bolton sitcom Phoenix Nights, celebrated the achievements of inspirational residents and staff at Contour Homes from across the North West.

Justin said: "It was a fabulous night recognising some inspirational people — and I am delighted to have been asked to host the event. The winners whose achievements have been celebrated could not have been more deserving."

Residents in Vernham Walk formed their group last year, and with the help of Bolton artist Adrian Barber they started work on the Family Album.

Barry McMullen, aged 61, who lives with his wife Susan in Vernham Walk, nominated the project after staff and residents at the housing association were invited to submit applications.

Mr McMullen said: "The Family Album has brought my wife and I so much closer to people we had never spoken to before, yet had lived so close to for such a long time.

"Adrian, the project artist, put so much time and effort in, going out in all weathers to get the job done.

"All the hard work has paid off and we are very proud of the results. It is a beautiful book and it is so interesting to read about the cultures and backgrounds of others.

"What started as a one-off project has become an ongoing way of life, and something we were able to build on for the future."

The award was one of eight handed out at a ceremony held at Manchester Cathedral.

The event, organised by Contour Homes, aimed to inspire, motivate and reward tenants, staff and contractors.

Judith Winterbourne, managing director of Contour Homes, said: "The awards are all about recognising and rewarding our tenants, residents, staff and contractors who go the extra mile to make our communities stronger.

"We heard so many inspiring stories and it was wonderful to celebrate those people who go out of their way to make life better for others. It really was a night to remember."
