FIREFIGHTERS in Bolton have been honoured — for rescuing a pet lizard.

Animal rights charity PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) presented the crew with an award, at Bolton Central Fire Station, after they rescued the bearded dragon and gave the reptile oxygen therapy.

Last month, crews were called to a terraced house in Chorley Old Road, Bolton, after a fire broke out in the kitchen.

When they arrived on the scene, a woman was outside the house with her two husky dogs, but she told them that her pet bearded dragon lizard was still inside.

They went in and put out the blaze, which they believe was caused by an electrical fault behind the fridge-freezer, and found the lizard in its tank suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

They took it out to the fire engine where firefighter Jason Snowden, from Farnworth station who also has a pet lizard, gave it oxygen.

After receiving the Hero to Animals Award, watch manager Tony McKenna said: "My colleagues and I are very honoured to accept this award and will place it alongside other station awards.

"It's always gratifying to be in a position to help members of the community and their animals."

Mimi Bekhechi, PETA director, said: "By remaining calm and determined, the fire and rescue crew saved the life of a terrified animal.

"Bolton and the surrounding communities are fortunate to have public servants who are willing to put their own safety on the line to protect all residents, whether on two legs or four."

The lizard was understood to have made a full recovery.
