A CRAFT group created a special Remembrance Day memorial cross to display at a church in respect for those who lost their lives during battle.

The Rainbow craft community group in Westhoughton, ran by Linda Jones, designed and created the centenary cross, with the words 'Lest We Forget' adorning the front beside more than 100 handmade poppies.

Members of the junior church, including Sophie, Libby and Leo Orrell, James Beckett and Daniel Woods, also made a poppy wreath during Sunday's service and laid it at the foot of the cross in remembrance.

The wooden cross, which stands at more than six foot tall, is still on display outside Westhoughton United Reformed Church, also known as Bethel.

Church Elder Margaret Curme said: "Within Westhoughton there is a wonderful community network and the Rainbow craft group are part of it.

"The group initially created a display for an exhibition at the library, and the idea for the cross was to take that a little bit further for Remembrance Sunday.

"They started decorating it last Thursday and filled it with poppies they had made. It definitely added something extra special to the occasion — very fitting for Remembrance Sunday."
