TEACHERS' hard work paid off when the scaled the highest mountain in England — and climbed five more of the Lake District fells.

Thirty members of Rivington and Blackrod Staff took part in the marathon walking challenge over the summer and this week presented the proceeds of their efforts to Derian House Children's Hospice.

Kelly Towler, who arranged the staff fundraiser, said: "The challenge was to scale six of the Lake District’s highest mountains, including the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, across 12 miles and ascending 5000ft.

"The challenge was tough, but rewarding as staff took in some of the country’s most amazing scenery.

"Through this challenge, and various charitable events across the year, including the Liverpool to Chester 100 mile cycle, non-uniform days and baking competitions, the school raised £1500 for local charity Derian House."

John Rullo, Derian House Community Fundraiser, said: "Derian House is so extremely grateful for all the hard work and dedication shown by the students and staff of Rivington and Blackrod High School.

"Every year we are set what seems like an insurmountable challenge of finding the funds that it takes to maintain the level of service and care we provide.

"This year that figure is £3.3 millions.

"The only way we can ensure that we’re here to meet the respite and support needs of our families is with the generosity of our supporters.

"We would like to thank everyone who has helped to make this challenge a success."
