CHILDREN took charge of their school after taking over from teachers for the day.

Visitors to St Bartholomew's CE Primary School in Westhoughton found themselves being greeted by 10-year-old Aaron Purdon, while enquiries to the school site were redirected to nine-year-old Luke Hughes — and infants were taught by 10-year-old Hannah Ormes and other much younger - but very good - members of staff.

But teachers had absolutely nothing to worry about, because the children had been invited to "take over " the school for The Children's Commissioner's Takeover Day 2014.

Young people had to apply for each role in school by composing a letter explaining why they were suited to that position — before undergoing an interview.

Headteacher Mark Johns said the children really did impress on takeover morning by submitting very high standard application forms.

One stated: "It has been brought to my attention that you are in need of a diligent and enthusiastic class teacher.

"Not a mediocre one, for you are a headteacher of exacting standards, and only the best will do."

The day was opened up to key stage two children, who took on all the different roles while they were being observed by their older colleagues.

Mr Johns said: "The children were fantastic. They dressed for the part but we didn't expect anything less.

"The standard of applications was very good and some of the children said they wanted to be a teacher."

He added: "The pupils did very well — they had a lot of work to get together — they really enjoyed it and they experienced applying for a job, which is what they will have to do in the future."
