A MOTORCYCLIST has been airlifted to hospital after crashing into a car in Farnworth.

The man was riding along Plodder Lane near the junction with Slack Fold Lane at 12.45pm on Saturday when he smashed into Citroen car.

Police were called to the scene and closed off Plodder Lane between Slack Fold Lane and Watergate Lane.

Due to the level of traffic in the area, police called for the North West Air Ambulance to attend.

A spokesman for the Air Ambulance service said: "Our helicopter was to the scene just before 1pm on Saturday and airlifted a man to Wythenshawe Hospital."

Police said the man had suffered back injuries and a suspected broken leg.

The road was closed in both directions for about two hours while officers cleared debris from the road and removed the vehicles.

Noone else was injured.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman urged witnesses to the crash to call 101.
