POLICE investigating a crash in Atherton are trying to trace a woman who pulled up at the scene just after a pensioner on a mobility scooter was hit by a car

Gordon Saywell died aged 72 after he was knocked down in Bag Lane on Thursday, November 20.

He was hit at about 10.45am by a blue Nissan Note turning right from Bag Lane into Gloucester Street, where Mr Saywell was crossing the road.

Mr Saywell suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, but died seven days later.

The police's serious collision investigation unit is now investigating the circumstances of the accident and officers are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

They believe a woman pulled up behind the Nissan following shortly after the accident.

She is described as white, about 40 years old, and had light coloured shoulder-length hair.

She was wearing trousers and a dark coat.

Sgt Paul Higgins said: “We believe this woman was in extremely close proximity to the collision and therefore is potentially a very important witness.

“If you are this person or know her please get in touch.”

The family of Mr Saywell have paid tribute to him.

Gordon Saywell’s family said: “Gordon was a lovely man who never went out without his flat cap. He was always a gentleman.

“He was very much loved father, granddad and a true friend to many."

Sgt Higgins added: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with this poor man’s family, who are understandably devastated with this tragic loss.”
