A WOMAN has been left with head injuries after she was knocked down near the train station in Trinity Street.

The woman, thought to be in her 30s, was hit by a Toyota Avensis while crossing from Thynne Street onto Newport Street at about 9.05am this morning.

She suffered bleeding on her head but was said to be conscious and breathing and her injuries are not believed to be serious.

She has been taken to hospital.

Trinity Street was closed from the train station to the junction at Black Horse Street while police and the ambulance service were at the scene.

Rowan Ryan heard the accident and was with the casualty within seconds, along with his father, Gerard.

Rowan, aged 21, from Bromley Cross, said: "As soon as I heard the collision, I ran over to the woman. She wasn't too responsive but she was conscious and breathing.

"I'm in the army and my dad's a nurse so our training kicked in.

"I made sure the casualty was stable and my dad kept her neck upright and put her into the ambulance.

"The driver called the ambulance."

Gerard, aged 59, added: "This woman has a head injury and we are hoping she is okay. I stayed with her until she got proper assistance."

While the woman was treated, a BMW was parked across Trinity Street to keep the road clear.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "There have been no arrests and the driver stayed at the scene."

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We got called out to a pedestrian being knocked down in Trinity Street and have cleared the scene."
