A MAN was led to safety by firefighters after a heater in a bedroom set alight clothes.

The 69-year-old who suffered slight burns to back of the head and right shoulder was making his way out of the property in Vermont Street, Bolton, as firefighters arrived just before 3am.

The alarm was raised after a neighbour smelled smoke.

Crews searched the property to ensure no one else was inside and tackled the fire, which had not spread any further.

Watch manager Karsten Boyle said: “He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital.

“The fire was in its early stages and we contained it.

“We will be visiting the area to provide reassurance to residents and fit smoke alarms to properties which do not have them. This is a service we provide to any residents.”
