IT was a very special Christmas Day for six youngsters — who hit the airwaves as Bolton woke up to presents under the tree.

The pupils from The Oaks Primary School in Sharples presented a show on 96.5 Bolton FM Community Radio from 9am to 10am.

The pre-recorded programme was the culmination of a half-term project in which the children used various aspects of the curriculum to plan their show.

Working out timings for the show involved children using their maths skills, while planning the interviews involved both literacy and ICT.

The school and the radio station hope to continue their partnership throughout 2015.

Tom Hampson, a year six teacher at The Oaks, said: "The children have loved the whole Bolton FM project from start to finish.

"All the class worked hard to do research and then write the show, it really was a whole class effort.

"This term we linked all of our learning to the show, for example in maths the children planned the show using protractors and pie charts to make sure they had enough to fill the hour slot.

"The day at Bolton FM recording the show was a brilliant experience and one the children thoroughly enjoyed. We look forward to working with Bolton FM in the future."

Keith Harris, business development manager at Bolton FM, said: "We hope to offer this project to more schools, both primary and secondary, in the borough.

"This will ensure pupils understand that the skills they are taught in school are necessary for their future."

The children thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and said it was something they would definitely do again.

Daniel Crompton, aged 10, said: "I really want to be a presenter when I'm older so it was great to get in the studio."

Isabel Chamberlain, aged 10, said: "I really enjoyed meeting all the team at Bolton FM."

Tom Keen, aged 10, said: "It was great experience and I look forward to working with Bolton FM in the future."

Abigail Chiappinelli, aged 10, said: "I couldn't believe it when we went live on the radio. I really enjoyed writing the show."
