A FOOTBALL project for youngsters in Farnworth has secured cash to take it through until spring — but it desperately needs further funding.

The project, which is run by the voluntary group Farnworth Futures, involves weekly Friday night football sessions for 16 to 19 year olds.

The games take place at St James's CE High School in Lucas Road, Farnworth.

The project secured about £2,000 in funding from councillors for the Farnworth neighbourhood management area, but the funding will run out in March.

It is aimed at encouraging positive group work and getting youngsters off the street.

On a good day, 30 to 40 youngsters will turn up to the school to play football.

John Eccleston, who grew up on Ramsey Avenue, takes charge of the sessions.

Mr Eccleston, aged 42, of Farnworth, said: "It's a great project for the kids.

"They are a great set of lads who are really loyal and just enjoy playing football.

"I've grown up in this community, so I know a lot of the lads who take part in these sessions and I know what's it like for them.

"When I was younger, there was nothing to do back then, we just played football.

"Some of the lads are of drinking age and without this project, they might be out on the streets on a Friday night."

John Pye, Farnworth and Great Lever neighbourhood manager, said: "This is such a positive activity for young men — it's great that they get so much out of it.

"This project is all about sustainability, which is why we want to keep it going."

The project was previously sponsored for three years by StreetWise Soccer, until the funding ran out earlier this year.

Each session costs approximately £110, which includes pitch hire, equipment, bibs and coaching.
