A SOCIAL care group is on a mission to keep vulnerable and isolated elderly people warm this winter.

Dignity in Life, based on Thicketford Road in Bolton, has received funding to fill 500 winter packs with essentials to help those in need get through the cold winter months.

The packs include hats, scarves, gloves, non-perishable food such as soup and long-life milk and will be available to anyone aged over 60 who lives alone — or with someone else also aged over 60.

Those receiving some form of social services personal care support, whether self funded or government funded, are also included.

Project manager Sabiha Mohammed said: "We are looking to help elderly people who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer's who have no one to look after them.

"We are also trying to identify others that might benefit from the packs so are asking people to let us know if they have a relative or neighbour who might need a pack.

"We also have volunteers on standby to come and help clear snow if people are trapped indoors or collect prescriptions and shopping if the weather is too bad for people to go outside."

The not-for-profit organisation, which provides personal care and support to people across the North West, is working in partnership with the Ummah Welfare Trust.

And it has linked up with several day care centres to provide the care packages but is looking for help to identify others who may be in need.
