STEP aside Vernon Kay — the future stars of radio are about to steal your broadcast crown at Johnson Fold community radio station.

The station, based at the Ucan centre in Johnson Fold, is entering its seventh year and once again opened its doors to allow people in the area who are interested in learning new skills and meeting new people to see what was on offer.

The community station, which is currently in the process of arranging its sixth four-day broadcast, hopes to attract more new members to take part in all aspects of the station — from technical roles, reading the news and weather and scheduling music.

James Mather, aged 27, has been involved since the 2012 broadcast and presents a drum 'n' bass show.

He said: "I have always been a DJ producing music, so when I first heard about the radio station I really wanted to get involved and host a show.

"I can't wait until the next broadcast. I enjoy listening to the radio but this is more about getting involved with the community and doing something different."

Nine-year-old Stephanie Dawson came along to learn how to use the mixing desks.

She said: "I've had fun playing with the mixing desks in the studio.

"In the future I'd like to have my own show so I can play One Direction. They're my favourite band."

Last year's broadcast attracted about 140 people — and chairman Adam Slater hopes this year will see both new and old faces.

He said: "We have these open days so that people can come in and see how they can get involved with their local community through radio.

"We have had people as young as two and as old as 82 take part — it is for anyone of any age and ability.

"We normally have at least 100 people take part in the broadcasts, but last year we smashed that and had 140 — and it would be great if we could beat that this year."
