TEAM Leigh Boxing's international middleweight Matty Burgess produced another all-action performance at Walkden in the National Youth Championships.

Appearing in the North West Region semi-final, 17 year old Matty took on Rochdale's talented and giant James Jacques, who at 6 ft 4ins towered above the Leigh boxer.

From the first bell Burgess stormed forward, throwing hard combinations to body and head while showing good head movement to get inside Jacques' longer reach.

Towards the end of the round Matty unleashed a barrage of hooks and uppercuts on his retreating opponent, forcing the referee to administer a standing eight count.

The second round saw the Rochdale-based boxer attempting to regain a foothold in the contest with a snappy jab, but Burgess continued his relentless attacks and catching Jacques with a massive left hook, again forced the referee to issue a standing 8 count.

The round finished with Jacques being bombarded to body and head, and while he bravely covered up and tried to escape, in truth the referee should have stopped the bout at this point.

The final round saw Burgess take his foot off the gas and box his way through to the end while continually scoring with clean right hands and left hooks, cruising to a unanimous points victory that put him in Saturday's North West Regional Final.
