PAUL Rowley's focus will be on defence when his free-scoring Centurions host Oldham Roughyeds on Sunday (kick-off 3pm) in their final pre-season fixture.

Leigh racked up 86 unanswered points against a poor Keighley Cougars side last weekend, making it three wins from three games in the build-up to their Kingstone Press Championship opener at home to Bradford Bulls on Sunday week.

Keighley's performance made for a one-sided "no-contest" in which the Centurions ran in 16 tries, the pick of which was the third of Laim Kay's hat-trick – a 90-yarder widely regarded as one of the best ever scored at Leigh Sports Village.

Rowley was pleased with the performance that also featured a Jonny Pownall hat-trick, but with Bradford in mind, he is now looking closely at areas he believes need attention.

“This time last year we wouldn’t have done that and as poor as Keighley were, and they were poor, we were good," he said, delighted with his own team's approach to the friendly. "We trained magnificently and scored some phenomenal tries, none more so than Liam's at the end.

“But I’ve got a big focus defensively at the minute – there are some things in our middle unit that I need to fix up.”

Leigh are likely to rest Sam Barlow, Tom Armstrong and Adam Higson who picked up injuries but Rowley expects all three to be available for the Bradford game.

“I probably won’t risk any of them against Oldham," he said. “But we’ll certainly approach the game in the same way we’ve approached our friendlies up to now.

"We’ve been intense and we’ve treated each game with respect and we’ve approached it like we would Super League opposition. That’s what you get in having pressure for places.”

l Steve Maden's service to the Centurions and now coach with the reserves, will be acknowledged tonight (Thursday), when the Leigh rugby league community comes together at Leigh East's Ledgard Avenue ground for a testimonial game in his honour.

The popular 32-year-old winger, who also had spells at Warrington, St Helens and Whitehaven, has linked his testimonial to the Team Isaac fund to help raise money for the nephew of current Leigh star Kurt Haggerty, who has been diagnosed with leukaemia.

“I will be donating a pound for everyone that attends to Team Isaac and there will also be a couple of bucket collections going round,” he said ahead of the match between a Centurions Select XIII and a combined Leigh East/Leigh Miners Rangers team.

"It’s the rugby league family all pulling together, with Kurt Haggerty playing for us; Isaac is his nephew, the son of his brother Gareth. I’ve played against Gareth Haggerty a lot. I know he’s a good lad and I can’t think of anything worse and we’ll do everything that we can to help him.”

Maden, who scored 73 tries in 210 appearances for the Centurions, confirmed he will play in the match.

“I had a knee operation in December, but the physios have worked their magic,” he added.

Admission to the testimonial (kick-off 7.30pm) is £5 for adults, £2 concessions.
