RESIDENTS in Bromley Cross say more must be done to tackle potholes in their area.

We revealed today that Bolton Council spent £1 million on pothole repairs last year.

But those living in and around Turton Road say that, despite this, the potholes near their homes are not being filled in properly and that the road needs to be resurfaced.

The council says it has visited the street several times over the past 12 months and that the road does not qualify for full resurfacing as it is structurally sound.

Turton Road is one of the main streets in and out of Bromley Cross and leads up to Bromley Cross train station.

Gary Williams, a Turton Road resident, aged 43, said: "The potholes round here urgently need sorting – I bet there's hundreds on Turton Road.

"The state of this road is shocking. I can't even park my vehicle on the pavement because the stones from the potholes fly up and chip my car whenever there's traffic.

"I wouldn't mind if this has just been going on for a few months, but it's been a long time."

A resident of nearby Hillside Avenue, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I go up and down this road all the time and it's in a really bad way — I think it needs resurfacing.

"£1 million almost doesn't seem enough when you look at the amount of potholes up here."

Bromley Cross councillor Alan Wilkinson lives in nearby Chapeltown Road.

Mr Wilkinson, aged 66, said: "I use the road frequently and it is particularly bad for potholes — it needs sorting out.

"It's not been that many years since it was resurfaced but the tarmac keeps breaking up.

"I think the council should come out to fill the potholes in more regularly."

A council spokesman said: "Turton Road is on a four week inspection regime. We have been out to the street a number of times over the last year to repair potholes.

"The road is structurally sound, therefore it does not qualify for full resurfacing."
