YOUNGSTERS have been digging deep to improve their local community.

Green-fingered pupils from St Paul’s CE Primary School, Astley Bridge, have been planting fruit trees as part of a community gardening project.

The children, who are part of the school’s gardening club, were taking part in a Bolton wide project to increase the amount of community accessible food.

Pupils, from years one to six, helped to plant the tress on Seymour Road, part of the Crompton edible trail.

Assistant head Paul Morgan said: “We were really keened to get involved. The kids love the outdoors and getting them outside it something that we try and encourage.

“As a school we are always looking for any ways that we can give something back to the community, so we jumped at the chance to take part in this project.”

Now that the trees are planted, the school’s pupils will be responsible for their upkeep over the coming years.
