A SCHOOL is on track to prove that there is a sport for everyone.

St John the Evangelist Primary School is adding more sports to its physical education curriculum to encourage more pupils to get involved with activities — with children having a say what they would like to try.

And to launch the new curriculum, as well as raise money for new sports equipment the school staged a staff, parents and year six children sports fundraising 20-mile bike ride over Belmont.

This was followed by a whole school fun run around the ground later in the week — and more events are planned for the year to get parents and all children involved.

PE co-ordinator Matt Dewhurst said: "We want to offer children a bigger range of sporting opportunities and creating a healthy school community.

"I thought because we are raising money for sport we raise it through doing sport activities.

"We want to be able to put on more sporting activities for pupils, such as table tennis, badminton and golf."

Children were invited to have their say on the sports they would like to try, which included having a huge trampoline in school — and parents are also getting on board.

Eight parents took part in bike ride.

Mr Dewhurst said: "The bike ride went really well, and some of the pupils turned up as well.

"It is really important to parents involved because they are the biggest influence on the children, if you can get them onboard then you are to a winner, if they get involved and their children get involved."

He added: "Getting children involved in sporting activities leads to a healthy lifestyle, but they also develop life-skills through taking part in sports, including team work, overcoming challenges, and through taking part in different sport they can find one that is right for them continue as a hobby or go further with it."

The school is planning to put on activities such as the fun run and bike ride throughout the year as well as introduce new sports.

"Every year group took part in the fun run, and they really enjoyed it, it was a really good day."

And the pupils say they are enjoying the different sports they can take part in.

Year six pupil Eden John said: "I really enjoy gymnastics while on the apparatus.

"The cycle through Belmont and back was quite tiring and hard, I would normally never do bike rides.

"I enjoy using the schools apparatus, along with playing ball games such as dodgeball and cricket."

Classmate Alfie Cowen added: "I really enjoy Mr Dewhurst gymnastic lessons as they are much fun.

"Going forward in the cycle ride was easier than the way back, but I got a lot of encouragement along the way from my dad and the others.

"Mr Dewhurst has increased my sporting skills in school activities and after school activities too."
