SCI-FI fanatics young and old had a rip-roaring time at Bolton's first ever Comic-Con exhibition.

More than 4,000 people gathered at the Macron Arena yesterday — some dressed in colourful costumes — to snap up bargains at dozens of stalls and meet like-minded people.

The event was the brainchild of Wigan movie enthusiast Paul Prescott, who has spent the last year bringing his dream to life.

He said it was such a success, he will bring it back to Bolton next year.

"It has been awesome. We have held two similar events in Wigan and both were successful, but not as successful as this one," said Mr Prescott.

He added: "Everyone I have spoken to has been very positive about what we've put on and I am delighted with the success of it."

Science fiction lovers began queuing at the venue well before the start time and some came dressed as screen icons such as Batman, Luke Skywalker and Wonder Woman.

Visitors took the chance to have their photographs taken with the likes of Freddy Kruegar and the Joker and there was an opportunity to meet celebrities such as Doctor Who actors Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy.

Another special guest was David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars Trilogy.

He said: "I'm very impressed by the turnout — and the costumes.

"People have made a real effort with their fancy dress, and the stalls have done a good trade.

"It's always nice to meet fans of Star Wars and chat with them about my experiences."

There was also a section for people to play story-themed board games and retro video games and consoles.

Jonathan Hindley, aged 48, brought his daughter Ellie and her friend Jennifer Halswell, both aged 16, to the convention.

"The girls both love Japanese anime comics and TV shows and they are in their element here," said Mr Hindley, of Atherton.

He added: "Sci-fi seems to be really popular at the moment and I think it's a great hobby for the girls."
