STARGAZERS are gearing up to witness a rare solar eclipse which is set to grace the skies shortly.

Amateur astronomers are set to head outdoors to watch the eclipse, as the moon passes between the sun and the earth, partially hiding the sun from view and blocking sunlight, casting temporary darkness over the town.

The action will take place at various times in the UK and in Bolton, things will get going around 8.45am and the eclipse will fade out around 10.30am.

The best views will to be had at 9.30am, though experts are strongly urging people not to harm their eyesight by looking directly at the sun.

It is the first such eclipse since 1999 and the next one is not due to take place until 2028.

The weather forecast is predicting the sky will be clear enough for people to see the eclipse clearly, though unpected cloud could hamper that.

The best views will to be had further north, with people in Scotland and the Faroe Islands getting the best look.
