THE last time Bolton Wanderers chaplain Phil Mason pulled on a pair of trainers in earnest was two years ago — when former Whites star Fabrice Muamba started the Great Manchester Run.

Mr Mason, who prayed by Fabrice's bedside as he lay in hospital following his on-pitch collapse in March 2012, was taking part in the run to support his friend's new charity Hearts and Goals.

Now Mr Mason is ready to race again — this time for Prostate Cancer UK — and he wants Whites fans to join him for the 10k Manchester run.

The Bolton Wanderers team is running in memory of Dave Melling, who lost his battle with prostate cancer in September last year.

He said: "It is the Football League's chosen charity and it is one close to our hearts here at Bolton too.

"We had a member of staff here who died from the condition and he died all too soon.

"Within 12 months of diagnosis his life was cut tragically short. It is a massive issue. People know about some of the other cancers a bit more I think — so it is good that the Football League recognises that."

Mr Mason added: "I've not done any running since I raced two years ago when Fabrice started the race.

"I needed a rest after that but now the challenge is back on. If I can do it then anyone can do it."

People can sign up for the race and choose which team they want to join.

Mr Mason hopes fans choose the Bolton Wanderers team and hope that they will also raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

The club will be raising money for the charity at the Norwich home game at the macron Stadium on April 11.

Ground staff member Gareth Lester is also joining the Amsterdam Men United Team cycling 145 miles over two days from London to Amsterdam to support the charity.

To register for the race go to greatrun.org/great-manchester-run or to support Mr Lester go to justgiving.com/Gareth-Lester.

People can also donate by texting BWFC68 plus an amount to 70070.
